Table of ContentsIntroduction 1: Sovereignty 2: Revolt 3: Resistance 4: Charlemagne 5: Feud 6: Crusade Conclusion AppendixReviews[Sunderland's] book is a remarkable collection of sources woefully underused (and likely little-known) by historians, presented to create a convincing argument for political engagement by Francophone barons throughout the High and Late Middle Ages. In many ways, this is a worthy successor to Achille Luchaire's La societe francaise au temps de Philippe-Auguste [...] this is a valuable work of interdisciplinarity which will prove important to literary critics and historians alike. * G.E.M. Lippiatt, University of East Anglia, in H-France Review * Author InformationLuke Sunderland is a scholar of medieval Francophone literature, especially in relation to ethical and political questions. He is the author of Old French Narrative Cycles: Heroism between Ethics and Morality (2010) and many articles, particularly on medieval translation and textual geographies. He has held research fellowships at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge and at the Stanford Humanities Center, and is currently Senior Lecturer in French at Durham University.
