OverviewIndonesia has done well during the past two decades by building a more resilient and inclusive economy and by achieving remarkable socio-economic progress. Home to more than 260 million people, Indonesia is the fourth most-populous country in the world and the largest economy in Southeast Asia. Indonesia's economy has been shaped by periods of extended prosperity, a major socio-economic and political crisis in the late 1990s, and a strong and sustained recovery during the past 20 years. Despite this rich history and the large the size of the economy, the economic literature on Indonesia remains limited. This book provides a comprehensive economic analysis and uncovers the underlying forces that are likely to shape Indonesia's economy. It also makes recommendations on how to strengthen the policy frameworks and toolkits - the country's 'soft infrastructure' - to help ensure that the Indonesian economy and the Indonesian people continue to prosper. Finally, it investigates the main constraints to growth and proposes options to boost potential economic growth. As the global landscape continues to evolve and shift, Indonesia's policy frameworks and toolkits must be adapted to fit this new economic environment. The chapters explore the key economic issues policymakers will likely face in the coming years. Full Product DetailsAuthor: International Monetary Fund , Luis E. Mitigating these global adverse impacts, the government has been emphasizing strategy on strengthening and stabilizing the domestic economy, and the effort has greatly benefited Indonesia and its people. Now we are witnessing that the world is moving toward a new normal equilibrium at a speed we have never seen or experienced before, and it brings more challenges. Through this book, the IMF once again shows its contribution through constructive commentary in assisting future policy development. I welcome this book as a balanced and comprehensive observation on the Indonesian economy. Moreover, this book should be a primary reference for anyone developing policy in Indonesia. - Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia This book takes us through the transformation of the Indonesian economy over the past two decades and provides perspective of the past challenges as well as the challenges ahead given the current global economic developments. The narrative unfolds important lessons to be learned in implementation of a sound policy mix (monetary, fiscal, and structural) to achieve both stability as well as strong, sustainable, balanced, and inclusive growth. Valuable insights in this book can serve as lessons for other emerging economies interested in undergoing economic reforms. - Perry Warjiyo, Governor of Bank Indonesia Realizing Indonesia's Economic Potential is a timely, comprehensive, and balanced assessment of the Indonesian economy two decades after the country's deep economic and political crisis. The 13 chapters draw attention to the country's remarkable progress in the wake of this crisis. But the authors argue that there are no grounds for complacency. This book is an important contribution to our understanding of contemporary Indonesia and options for the future. - Hal Hill, H.W. Arndt Professor Emeritus of Southeast Asian Economies, Australian National University This ambitious book captures vividly the daunting challenges facing policymakers in many commodity-exporting economies struggling to achieve sustained rapid growth without capsizing in the turbulent waters of today's global financial markets. It is an inspiring story of the policymakers' determination to strengthen macroeconomic resilience to external shocks while striving to unleash the economic potential of the country to meet the expectations of people for higher standards of living. - Hoe Ee Khor Chief Economist of ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office "“Indonesia’s prudent macro and fiscal framework has helped navigate the Indonesian economy through several global shocks.
