Men say understanding a woman is IMPOSSIBLE...This book is written by a Christian physician with many years of experience in counseling men in marital crisis. 1 Peter 3:7 encourages men to live with their wives with understanding . Dr. Sharp's premise of marital failure is that many men do not understand their unique role in meeting the needs of their wives. The book is written using the author's personal life experiences and lessons learned from client situations. It is only in understanding his wife that a man can love her. The Bible teaches us that if a man does not understand his wife, he does not love her as Christ loved him. The book describes Dr. Sharp's experiences with his own family and the struggles he experienced with the loss of a son that made him realize that he had failed in being the kind of man his wife deserved. Then the book covers many of the situations men whom he has counseled have experienced and how they were encouraged to learn to think in a different manner. Topics like men's passivity, women's controlling tendencies, the submissive homemaker and the suffering servant husband are developed from a Biblical perspective. The Biblical account of the creation of man and woman is discussed and how their unique relationship in creation should bring a man to discover that a woman needs 1) support, 2) an emotional relationship, 3) praise and honor, 4) security, and 5) companionship from her husband. Another chapter describes the story of the quiet desperation of a man in crisis, wounded from his past, failed in his work, lost in his marriage, rejected by his children and searching for a higher meaning. Learning to develop the help-mate aspect of his wife goes a long way to bringing the man back on track. Dr. Sharp is a retired Air Force physician and a board certified gastroenterologist. He and his wife, Pat, who has a master's degree in family counseling, operated the Good Life Biblical Counseling Center in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. They have been married for 49 years, with two children and three grandchildren. Dr. Sharp has published free-lance articles in magazines and original scientific papers in peer-reviewed medical journals. This is his first book.
