Overview

Raymond Pettibon's work moves fluidly between the personal, poetic, and political. In Raymond Pettibon, he brings together a body of newly created works on paper. From meditations on mortality to cutting portraits of dictators, Pettibon pushes into the territory that is at once challenging and timely. In his newest works we see ourselves-and the many faces of America-reflected and distorted by Pettibon's vision. As noted art historian Benjamin H. D. Buchloh has put it, Pettibon practices a form of dark caricature, in which the audience is implicated as much as the subject depicted. Pettibon has also taken his first Hong Kong show as an opportunity to revisit themes that have long interested him-from surfing to horseback riding. Images of Happy Valley, one of the most famous racecourses in the world, located in Hong Kong, are paired with large, dripping cathedrals and sprawling waves. His images are accompanied on page by his scrawled words, artistic commentary ranging from punchy and political to high literary and extremely poetic. This publication includes a conversation between Pettibon and Seth Cameron. Published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at David Zwirner, Hong Kong, in 2019, Raymond Pettibon is available in both English only and bilingual English/traditional Chinese editions.

Author Information

American artist Raymond Pettibon (b. 1957) is known for his work that embraces a wide spectrum of American high and low culture, from the deviations of marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics, and sexuality. Taking their points of departure in the Southern California punk-rock culture of the late 1970s and 1980s and the do-it-yourself aesthetic of album covers, comics, concert flyers, and fanzines that characterized the movement, his drawings have come to occupy their own genre of potent and dynamic artistic commentary. Pettibon's work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at prominent institutions worldwide, most recently in two traveling museum surveys organized respectively by the Deichtorhallen Hamburg - Sammlung Falckenberg in 2016 and the New Museum, New York, in 2017. Seth Cameron is a painter and writer working in New York. He is a cofounder of the Bruce High Quality Foundation. From 2009 to 2017, he served as president of BHQFU, the collective's radical post-graduate school. Cameron also teaches sculpture, drawing, and interdisciplinary studies at The Cooper Union and has lectured widely on arts education. His work is represented by Nathalie Karg Gallery in New York and McClain Gallery in Houston. His writing has appeared in The Brooklyn Rail, The Miami Rail, and The Paris Review.
