Abstract: Abstract of dissertation entitled Racial, Gender and Ear Factors in Neonatal Transient Evoked Otoacoustic Emission Screening Submitted by April Chiu Hoi Kan for the degree of Master of Science in Audiology at the University of Hong Kong in May 2004 This was a retrospective study to determine whether gender, racial and ear factors affect tone burst and click-evoked otoacoustic emission measurements for neonates in a maternity hospital. This study included three addressed research questions: were there any significant differences in clicked-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) and tone burst evoked otoacoustic emissions (TBOAEs) (a) between male and female neonates, (b) between right and left ears of neonates, and (c) among Chinese, other Asian and European neonates? A total of 519 neonates with age ranged from 24 hours to 4 days were examined. These neonates were categorized into three racial groups: Chinese, other Asian and European neonates. Both CEOAE and TBOAE data were obtained by using an ILO288 Echoport Otodynamic Analyzer. The findings of this study showed that there were no significant sex and ear differences vi ii on CEOAEs and TBOAEs in neonates. However, a significant sex effect on TBOAEs signal-to-noise ratio centered at 1 kHz and 2 kHz (TBSNR1 & TBSNR2) was found within the other Asian neonates, with males had larger TBSNR1 and TBSNR2 than females. A significant racial effect was also found in CEOAEs (overall CEOAE signal-to-noise ratio & overall CEOAE response level) and TBOAEs (signal-to-noise ratio, response & reproducibility all centered at 3 kHz). For all the parameters with a significant racial effect, the European subjects displayed higher mean values than the other Asian subjects, except for the TBOAE reproducibility at centered at 3 kHz (TBREPRO3). The other Asian subjects had higher mean values of TBREPRO3 than the European subjects. The Chinese subjects had the lowest mean values of all these CEOAE and TBOAE parameters among the three racial groups. Significant differences in TBOAE parameters (Signal-to-noise ratio, response and reproducibility) across frequencies were also found. ix DOI: 10.5353/th_b3047098 Subjects: Otoacoustic emissionsNewborn infants
