The book deals with interrelations between economic growth and public expenditure in India and Tanzania in a comparative framework. Incidentally, public expenditure has not been an exclusive focus of public sector economics, sporadic studies notwithstanding. The book incorporates an innovative approach to public sector economics as it seeks to empirically determine the impact of growth of public expenditure on growth of the economy; the interrelation between these two variables has not been much in focus of research or teaching so far. The book lucidly explains the conceptual framework of public sector economics as a whole. It delves deep into the political economy of public expenditure with the evolution of the theory and philosophy of states and the different phases and stages of expansion of the roles and functions of public policy in general and public expenditure in particular in economic and social affairs of the nations. Thus, the book goes beyond the narrow confines of political and economic theories and furnishes an inter-disciplinary framework of analysis of the role of public expenditure in growth of economies and welfare of the people. This is probably the first book which compares the growth of public expenditure and its impact on the growth of economies of two developing countries of South East Asia and East Africa. The book imports statistical and econometric methods and models of data analysis which range from simple tools of descriptive statistics to advance and complex econometric time series models. The analytical approach is not the slave of one single method or model which ensures that the results and inferences drawn are conclusive rather than spurious or otiose. The book uses simple and easy to understand language to make it reader friendly.

Author Information

Shri Prakash holds Master’s and PhD degrees in Economics. He is currently Professor of Eminence and former Dean Research, Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH). He has more than 50 years of teaching and research experience. He has authored 12 books and published more than 200 research papers in national and international journals of repute. He has chaired numerous sessions at national and international conferences in India and abroad; has been consultant to World Bank, UNESCO, UNICEF, and full time consultant to UGC; and has guided 31 MPhil and PhD scholars. He has been visiting Professor at Karl Marx (now Budapest) University, Institute of Econometrics and Statistics, University of Lodge, Poland. He was conferred Kautaliya Award for his contribution to teaching and research in Economics. Richard Fue Kiangi holds Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Groningen (Netherlands) and result of his PhD thesis, submitted to Mohanlal Sukhadia (MLS), Udaipur is awaited. He is a lecturer in economics and related disciplines at the Institute of Finance Management, Tanzania and also works as the visiting lecturer at the Institute of Tax Administration (ITA), Tanzania. He has over 10 years of teaching and research experience. He has authored four research papers and presented several papers at national and international conferences. His areas of specialisation are: economic growth, econometrics and public sector economics particularly public expenditure. Sudhi Sharma is an MBA from Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU), Lucknow, and PhD in management from MLS University Udaipur. She has over 8 years of teaching and research experience. She worked as Assistant Professor at 3 reputed management institutes of Kanpur, Gurgaon and Noida, and has also worked as Senior Research Analyst/Associate at BIMTECH, Greater Noida. She is currently Joint Secretary, Northern Region, Input Output Research Association, India. She has published and presented 16 research papers in reputed journals and at national and international conferences.
