Overview

Principles of Protection sets forth the definitive design standards for underground shelter engineering. This is the book the U.S. government should have written for the protection of its citizens. Walton McCarthy's research started in 1978 when he was privately funded for the educational research that formed the basis of his first book, The Nuclear Shelterist. He thereafter wrote Principles of Protection: The U.S. Handbook of NBC Weapon Fundamentals and Shelter Engineering Design Standards, known in the industry as POP. This book is now in its sixth edition for 2013. McCarthy has designed and built over 1,400 shelters using steel, concrete, wood, fiberglass, and plastic composites.

Author Information

Walton McCarthy is a mechanical engineer with a BS from Montana State University and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Testing and Materials, and the Composite Fabricators Association. He is also a licensed pilot and HAM radio operator. Some of his contributions to the fields of engineering and civil defense include the following: a new rating system for underground shelters to determine radiation doses inside a shelter known as the Total REMs in Shelter system or TRS, the Overpressure Choking Theory used to negate the effect of blast valves, fiberglass structures composed of multiple compound curves designed to resist multiple external pressures, and developing various underground shelter emergency escape methods. McCarthy has also worked with many government specialists in developing practical data for residential, corporate, and military applications.
