Overview

Principles of Engineering Tribology: Fundamentals and Applications introduces readers to the core theories and fundamentals of the field, its basic terminology and concepts, as well as advanced topics such as the tribological properties of various engineering surfaces, roughness measurements, and the mechanics of surface contact. The fundamentals of friction and wear of metallic and non-metallic materials such as polymers, ceramics, rubbers, and composites are discussed, as are fluidic, gaseous, grease, and solid media lubrication techniques. In addition, the properties of lubricants and various types of additives incorporated are discussed, along with a methodology for conducting friction, wear and lubrication laboratory testing and an overview of simulation and modeling methods for various tribosystems. Case studies and applications are featured throughout, with a particular emphasis on analyzing failure modes of tribosystems.

Author Information

Ahmed Abdelbary is a Chief Engineering and tribology consultant working for the Egyptian Government. He holds a B.Sc. from the Military Technical College MTC in Cairo, and received his MSc and Ph.D. from Alexandria University. He is a full member of the Egyptian Society of Tribology EGTRIB and Egypt Syndicate for Engineers. His research aims to provide a better understanding of the fatigue wear mechanisms in polymers and other materials, and his areas of technical expertise extend to design and manufacture of many mechanical and tribometer systems. He has authored and edited multiple books, chapters, and several research papers with reputable publishers including Elsevier. Li Chang is Senior Lecturer at the School of Aerospace, Mechanical, and Mechatronic Engineering, The University of Sydney, where he teaches courses on the Engineering Materials for Adv Manufacturing, Engineering Tribology, and Design for Advanced Manufacturing. His current research interests include carbon fiber reinforced polymers (their tribology and additive manufacturing), nanomaterials, alloys, and more.
