Principles and Methods of Toxicology

Overview

The core text and standard reference in toxicology has once again been revised, updated, and expanded to incorporate the latest testing procedures and address the new challenges faced by toxicologists. Dr. Hayes has, once again, brought together more than 70 distinguished investigators to detail current testing procedures, offer guidelines on data interpretation, and highlight major areas of controversy. And once again, unlike its competitors, the book deals with the methods of toxicology as well as principles and agents. Virtually all the previous edition's chapters have been rewritten, and new chapters have been added on exposure assessment and epidemiology for toxicologists. You will find an in-depth look at the principles underlying toxicology, i.e., absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, as well as topics dealing with pharmacokinetics. An excellent chapter on the history of toxicology starts the book. The second section describes many of the agents/chemicals found in the workplace and in the environment along with information on their untoward effects.; The book allows the working toxicologist, whether a senior toxicologist or graduate student, to understand and use basic experiments in toxicology. Detailed protocols, including many of the pitfalls inherent in these experiments, are detailed in the third section. These experiments range from routine testing protocols to state-of-the-art techniques. The last section is new and contains a glossary of the important terms found in the book. In addition, each chapter has a series of questions that are designed to challenge the reader to rethink the contents of the chapter.
