Whether Sophie is new to you or you've read about her in The Blue Pendant and Ruins in Silk, she'll immediately steal your heart. She's just such a determined and loveable soul that you want the best for her. The best for anyone doesn't always come during a period of war and this is true for dear Sophie. Jennings creates a rich London and hospital atmosphere where you can almost smell the antiseptic and taste the damp air. I don't want to give any spoilers away but I know you'll fall in love with her as I did. When her mother died, her father took her to England to continue on with his business until he passed away in a horrific fire. With both parents dead, Sophie was left with nothing, so she became a maid in a large hotel, which taught her a lot of how to deal with multitudes of people. She applied to a nursing vocation, where she met an old family friend who she had once been engaged to.

Susan A. Jennings was born in Britain of a Canadian mother and British father. Both her Canadian and British heritages are often featured in her stories.
