Overview

The whole world is at war. So is her soul... Sussex, 1914. Sophie Romano still grieves for her father. Plagued by nightmares of his horrific death, she tries to content herself with life as the head maid at a prestigious seaside hotel. But after her heart is broken by unrequited love, she seeks a new beginning training as a nurse in London. With the bombs from the German Zeppelins and the suffering of her patients reviving her terrible dreams, Sophie fears she won't be chosen to serve on the Western front. And when an old flame returns and a cruel trainer makes life a living hell, the traumatized girl faces the ultimate fight to grow into the woman she's determined to become. Amidst the madness of siren-filled streets, can she claim her own peace of mind?

Prelude to Sophie's War - Reviewed in Canada on January 11, 2021 The historical detail in this book was wonderful and captivating. Whether Sophie is new to you or you've read about her in The Blue Pendant and Ruins in Silk, she'll immediately steal your heart. She's just such a determined and loveable soul that you want the best for her. The best for anyone doesn't always come during a period of war and this is true for dear Sophie. Jennings creates a rich London and hospital atmosphere where you can almost smell the antiseptic and taste the damp air. I don't want to give any spoilers away but I know you'll fall in love with her as I did. Prelude to Sophie's War Reviewed in Canada on March 16, 2022 1914 England Sophie Romano grew up in a family of substantial means in Italy . When her mother died, her father took her to England to continue on with his business until he passed away in a horrific fire. With both parents dead, Sophie was left with nothing, so she became a maid in a large hotel, which taught her a lot of how to deal with multitudes of people. She applied to a nursing vocation, where she met an old family friend who she had once been engaged to.
