Overview

"English summary: With the critical edition of Johann Cruger's (1598-1662) ""Praxis Pietatis Melica"" (PPM), an essential contribution to the study of this centuries old hymnal, which between 1640 and 1737 was published in more than 70 editions in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Stetting, Gotha, and Hamburg. As a principal work of the religious culture of the 17th and 18th centuries, the importance of the hymnal for understanding the music, piety, and book culture of the period can hardly be overestimated. Volume I.1 offers the text of the 1661 edition with 550 songs and 227 general bass movements. This ""Editio X"" as the last edition owned by Cruger makes possible the extensive view on his activity as a collector, editor, and composer of church music. Many new song texts, among which those by Paul Gerhardt stand out, were set to music by Cruger himself. This edition is perfect for musical scholars, theologians, scholars of literature, and scholars of church music.
