Consta de 10 capitulos en que el autor revisa los temas fundamentales de la pragmatica: actos de habla, descortesia, discurso, contexto. Anade a ellos un capitulo sobre variacion pragmatica, campo en el que es un experto y termina con una seccion dedicada a la ensenanza. Cierra el libro con un bloque realmente interesante y poco frecuente en los manuales universitarios: Aprendizaje, ensenanza y metodos de pragmatica. Este acercamiento a la didactica se hace en una doble dimension: la ensenanza de la pragmatica, algo fundamental cuando se ensena una segunda lengua (dirigido al docente), y la direccion hacia la investigacion: Metodos de recoleccion de datos y el proyecto de investigacion (dirigido al alumno).
