Overview

E. Jill Riley is not a good victim. However, she is a triumphant survivor who has scars to prove that wounds do not have to stay open forever. An orphan who was adopted into a culture of chaos and ineffable abuse, Jill suffers from complex PTSD and dissociative identity disorder. Follow her story from Seoul, Korea, to the deserts of Nevada and on to the beautiful North Idaho panhandle. Explore her life as a pastor in both new and established churches and then life as an inpatient in a psychiatric facility. Finally, walk with her as she discovers a newly imagined, full life of faith, despite severe mental illness. As a minister and survivor Jill is uniquely positioned to be a leading voice in the intersection of mental health, faith, and the church.

Reviews

""Post-Traumatic Faith is the prescription faith leaders give others, but we forget to take ourselves. E. Jill Riley's authenticity and candor invite us to see ourselves through the looking glass of her journey and engage in the uncomfortable, yet necessary, lifelong task of healing."" --William Mack III, pastoral counselor and spiritual director ""Post-Traumatic Faith is a courageous and unflinching account of E. Jill Riley's efforts to recover from a childhood that was horrifically abusive. Riley takes an honest look at what happened to her, how the abuse impacted her ability to function in the real world, and finally how one cannot escape one's past until they take the time to confront it directly. Riley's recovery is an inspiration, and her ability to retain any semblance of faith after what she went through is a testament to her own willingness to transform pain into power."" --Russell Rowland, author of Fifty-Six Counties: A Montana Journey ""E. Jill Riley invites us to explore what it's like to grow up in traumatic environments, strive for success in every area of life, receive diagnoses of Complex PTSD and DID, and still choose to love God and the people in her life. Her writing is compelling, honest, and heart-wrenching--and it is also filled with grace, kindness, and hope. I couldn't put the book down."" --Alaine Buchanan, dean, College of Graduate and Professional Studies, North Central University ""I applaud E. Jill Riley for her courage to tell her story. I pray it will open doors for conversation with others who have suffered abuse in hopes that it can lead to their healing and wholeness. I have worked with trauma victims for decades and this book offers hope."" --Mark Novak, former executive minister of the ordered ministry, Evangelical Covenant Church ""A well-written story about complex issues told with dignity and humor. It asks timely questions about faith, mental illness, and the current Christian culture. I hope it gets you to consider your attitude about mental illness and faith."" --Nancy McGrade, licensed clinical professional counselor
