OverviewThe aim of The Cultural Front of the Islamic Revolution Series of books from Lion of Najaf Publishers is to provide a truly alternative perspective from that which one has become used to receiving from the mainstream press and publishers. The voices expressed in this series are the genuine revolutionary voices from the heart of the Islamic Revolution of Iran and provide a refreshing change from the mad mulla clap-trap of the mainstream media and publishers (and indeed from their alternative press loyal opposition). Sa'id Jalili's essay begins by framing the vital question, which is: What is to be done [about the decline of the presence of revolutionary artists and cultural activists in the post-revolutionary art scene and in the cultural arena more generally]? He then goes on to present three perspectives concerning the cultural front of the Islamic Revolution: the global perspective, the historical perspective, and the view from within. The essay then proceeds to provide a masterly overview, as only a person in Mr. Jalili's position can, of the topology of the most important fault lines in the cultural front of the Islamic Revolution, which include: the disconnect between religious knowledge and art; the disconnect between the media and art and between the media and cultural theory; the generational divide; the disconnect between production and consumption; and finally, the disconnect between the administrators and the producers of art and cultural productions. Mr. Jalili then goes on to ask the question, What is to be done? and provides three strategies in response to this question, the explication of each of which provides deep insights into the inner workings of the art and cultural scene in Iran from an insider's perspective which were hitherto unavailable to the Western reader. The suggested strategies are: the reevaluation and revitalization of existing capacities; bridging the divides of the disconnects; and strengthening the private sector and the grassroots elements within the cultural front of the revolution. Sa'id Jalili is the Founder and Director of the Bureau for the Study of the Cultural Front of the Islamic Revolution. He is also the Executive Director of the highly popular annual Ammar People's Film Festival, as well as the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the highly influential Principalist -leaning political and cultural monthly Raah .
