Possible solutions to low yield production of groundnut (Arachis hypogea) in Africa

Overview

One of the most significant oilseed crops cultivated in semi-arid and subtropical regions of the world is groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.). The crop's low yield prevents it from meeting market demands. In the tropics, groundnuts are typically cultivated as a solitary crop or interplanted with cereal crops. Africa, comprising Nigeria, Niger, and Sudan, produces 929 kg ha-1, which is extremely low when compared to the Americas (3632 kg ha-1). Asian nations, particularly China and India, have the capacity to produce 2217 kg ha-1. Proper agronomic practices, including weed control techniques, plant spacing, fertilizer application, planting date, days to irrigation interval, etc., were employed for research findings in an attempt to increase the groundnut production yield in the study areas. The study revealed that improved varieties of SAMNUT 24 and SAMNUT 26 outperformed SAMNUT 25 in terms of growth and yield.
