SUBJECTFungal infections are assuming a greater importance, largely because of their increasing incidence among transplant patients and other immunocompromised individuals, including those with AIDS. As a result, clinicians and microbiologists alike need to be familiar with the clinical presentation and methods for the diagnosis of these infections, as well as the current treatment choices. NEED Fungal diagnosis is in many cases a visual art and high quality illustrations alongside concise text will help all those who need to understand and teach medical mycology. There have been several significant developments in the diagnosis and management of a number of superficial and deep-seated fungal infections in the past few years. There are also new approaches to the diagnosis and prevention of infection and new drugs have been introduced. The role of several older drugs has changed in the light of recent clinical trials. All of these developments will be reflected in a new edition of the Pocket Guide to Fungal Infection which is an ideal companion to Richardson's larger book, Fungal Infection, 3/e, which is publishing in September 2003. FORMAT The convenient and practical pocket book format will be retained. The new edition will present the major fungal infections in a synoptic manner that will assist in the diagnosis and management of disease. It will be divided into six sections with over thirty descriptions of diseases using consistently applied headings: definition, geographical distribution, causal organisms and habitat, clinical manifestations, essential investigations and management. The text will remain in the form of bulleted paragraphs to make it easier to locate. It will include major changes to the management section of each chapter, in particular the sections on opportunistic fungal infections and systemic mycoses. COMPETITION There are currently two other colour guides on fungal infection. However, both of these were published in 1994 and 1997 and therefore are now very out-of-date. However, the bulk of the sales have been to Gilead who has bought a bulk number of copies each year totalling 24,500 units and bringing in revenue of approximately GBP100,000. We are confident that the close links between the author and Gilead will ensure the second edition is just as successful. The costs show, for the first printing, a trade sale of 500 copies and 5000 copies for pharmaceutical (at GBP5 each) followed by two reprints of 5000 copies each. SUPPORT Both authors are world-renowned experts in the field of medical mycology. Malcolm Richardson has very strong ties to the pharmaceutical company, Gilead, and frequently lectures around the world on their behalf. Their drug, AmBisome, is still doing very well in the market place. Karen Campbell (based at the headquarters of Gilead) and Richardson are meeting at ICAAC in Chicago, September 2003, to discuss this book and the third edition of Fungal Infection. MARKETING The book can be promoted through all our lists in clinical microbiology, infectious diseases, dermatology and haematology. In addition, our collaboration with the newly formed Health Protection Agency will allow us to target this specific group. Malcolm Richardson has his own mycology web site (www clinical-mycology.com) and would be happy to advertise the title there with a link to our online bookshop. SUMMARY Pocket Guide to Fungal Infection presents the major features of fungal infections of man, providing visual information for each pathogen and the infections they cause in a convenient and practical format. This is an ideal guide for all those who encounter fungal infections as part of their everyday practice, including medical microbiologists, infectious disease specialists, dermatologists and haematologists.

This is a well designed new edition of a guide published six years ago. It has the advantages of brevity and outstanding photographs.
