She received a B.A. from the University of Toronto in 1982 and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1987 and taught at Harvard University before joining the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. She specializes in Classical Greek and Hellenistic philosophy, with special interest in natural philosophy and the ethical tradition.
