OverviewMeteorological records have shown that mean annual temperatures have increased by approximately 1 °C over the past century, and this trend is expected to continue in the future. Meanwhile, droughts and floods are occurring more frequently than before. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events poses a serious threat to global food security. As a result, improving plant, particularly crop, resistance to abiotic stresses has become increasingly important. It is therefore crucial to understand how plants effectively cope with high-intensity extreme weather conditions, and to elucidate the underlying molecular as well as physiological mechanisms of plant responses to abiotic stresses. This knowledge can aid in the development of technologies to help plants withstand abiotic stresses and mitigate the impacts of extreme climate change on crop security.
