Overview

"International space law is less than 50 years old. Although the work on the codification of space law started in the late 1950s, the Outer Space Treaty was only adopted in January 1967. However, much earlier than that, even as early as 1932, the first ideas about legal rules for human activities in outer space were being considered. Very little is known about these early drafts and proposals, and the pioneering work of early scholars in the field remains relatively unknown. This volume seeks to redress this by analysing the biographies and contributions to international space law of eleven such early ""pioneers”, whose ground-breaking and original work helped to develop the field in important ways. The collection starts in the 1930's with the Czech author Vladimir Mandl, and dwells at length on the 1950's, the early time of space flight. The section on each ""pioneer"" is written by different members of the International Institute of Space Law, making this a lively, fascinating and unique collection of essays, of interest to the whole community of space lawyers."

Author Information

The International Institute of Space Law (IISL), founded in 1960, is an independent non-governmental organisation dedicated to fostering the development of space law. Membership is composed of individuals and institutions from more than forty countries elected on the basis of their contributions to the field of space law or other social sciences related to space activities. In addition, prospective membership is open to students and young professionals with a demonstrated interest in space law. The IISL holds several conferences on space law around the world each year, including the Colloquia on the Law of Outer Space, and publishes annual Proceedings. It also organises the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition, judged by members of the International Court of Justice, since more than twenty years. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary in 2010, Martinus Nijhoff published a new edition of The Law of Outer Space: an Experience in Contemporary Law-Making by Manfred Lachs, edited by the IISL. Stephan Hobe is Professor of International Law, European Law and International Economic Law at the University of Cologne, and Director of the Institute of Air and Space Law of the University of Cologne. He is a member of all the important international institutions in the field of air and space law, like the International Institute of Space Law, the European Centre for Space Law and the International Academy of Astronautics. Professor Hobe has authored approximately 250 papers on Public International Law and Air and Space Law. Inter alia he is co-editor of the Cologne Commentary on Space Law (Carl Heymanns Verlag), a comprehensive three volume commentary on the entire international space legislation.
