Physicochemical Properties of Chitosan-Based Materials in Multiple Phases: From Fundamentals to Biomedical, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Applications

Overview

Physicochemical Properties of Chitosan-Based Materials in Multiple Phases: From Fundamentals to Biomedical, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Applications provides a comprehensive overview of structure diversity and versatile properties of chitosan while also summarizing the latest advancements and current applications of chitosan-based materials that are suitable for various purposes within pharmaceutics, biomedicine, chemical engineering, and environmental sciences. The book explores the complex nature between chitosan structure and its biological activity and describes strategies of polymer modification in order to tailor its physicochemical and mechanical properties. The utilization potential of chitosan for the fabrication of functional biomaterials in either liquid, semi-solid, or solid-state different phases (aqueous mixtures, hydrogels, solid films) is also covered. Finally, the key factors important to obtain chitosan materials suitable for biomedical applications and the characteristics of hybrid materials formed by chitosan and other components, including surfactants, polyelectrolytes, inorganic nanoparticles, are discussed.

Author Information

Dr. Emilia Szymańska is a postdoctoral researcher and a member of research group in the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology at Medical University of Bialystok, Poland. She received her doctorate in pharmaceutical science in the research area of chitosan carriers as smart platforms for local delivery of antimicrobial agents. Her main research interests address process optimization and characterization of biopolymer-based delivery systems for microbicide agents and application of nanotechnology in the pharmaceutical field. At present, she leads research projects related to investigation the permeability profile of water-soluble and poorly water-soluble active agents across human and animal mucosal epithelium Dr. Giuseppe Cavallaro is an Assistant Professor at Department of Physics and Chemistry “E. Segrè” of University of Palermo, Italy. He was a Research Associate at the Institute of Micromanifacturing, Louisiana Tech University, USA, and Institut fur Chemie, Technische Universitat Berlin, Germany. He is the author of more than 120 publications in peer reviewed international journals. He is Editor of the book “Clay Nanoparticles: Properties and Applications – 1st Edition” by Giuseppe Cavallaro, Rawil Fakhrullin, Pooria Pasbakhsh (Publisher: Elsevier). His research activity is mainly focused on the physico-chemical characterization of nano-organized systems based on nanoclays and organic macromolecules, such as biopolymers and surfactants.
