OverviewRed phosphorus is a less toxic form of phosphorus that does not ignite on its own. It is often used in pesticides, incendiary shells and safety matches. However, it is not very stable. Rather than spontaneously igniting, it reacts with oxygen at a high temperature. Phosphorus is often referred to as the Devil's element, because of its explosive properties. When it enters water, it can cause algae blooms in rivers. Overuse of phosphorus in a stream, lake or river can lead to eutrophication, which is a direct threat to aquatic ecosystems.
