OverviewFunctionalism and art are soberly and elegantly united in this new structure. Situated close by the Swiss Railway station in Basle, the newly built Peter Merian house juts out like an iceberg in a sea of trains, trams, cars and pedestrians. A cool, shimmering green, its appearance seems to mysteriously alter with every change in weather. Its inner structure is concealed by an alternate matte and transparent glass skin which was designed by Zwimpfer Partner Architects in cooperation with the American artist Donald Judd. Artists including Hans Danuser, Brigitte Kowanz, Roni Horn, Francois Morellet, Ursula Mumenthaler, Pipilotti Rist, Beat Zoderer also participated in the project. When architects incorporate art into their projects, when artists involve themselves in the constraints of the construction industry, the results can be immensely fruitful as this striking new building in the Basle cityscape goes to prove. Margherita Spiluttinis photographs which were taken especially for this publication show the structure in all its cool, green elegance.
