Overview

This book is comprised of 40 chapters on the current state of multi-modal molecular imaging with respect to PET, PET/CT and PET/MRT. It covers basics as well as applications in science and common medical practice, including normal variants, pathologic conditions and artifacts. Small animal PET-scanners and their applications are also included. Each chapter includes a short general introduction for the newcomer and is intended to be independent so that the reader may refer to any particular chapter of interest without loss of continuity. Each chapter has its own alphabetical list of references as well as cross-references to other chapters within the text. In addition, there is a glossary that encompasses all chapters. The book does not exclusively focus upon the radiotracer [F-18]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), but covers all up-to-date, relevant radiotracers, providing information on both their chemistry and new clinical indications. The chapters on basics cover the production and characterization of most of the important positron emitters and tracers, quality control, dose finding, physics of dual mode imaging, safety aspects of radiation and electromagnetic fields, new strategies for dose reduction, and image fusion and modeling. The chapters on scientific application include methods, models, strategies and results in biochemistry, biology, and pharmacology at hand of cell-culture PET (cc-PET and cc-PET-CT), small animal PET-CT, PET-MRT and PET-SPECT. This includes gene expression and therapy, receptor imaging, microdosing and multi-modal guided therapy with radiation, drugs, genes or combinations of different strategies. The chapters on medical application cover screening, detection, staging, preoperative diagnostics, therapy planning and follow up with PET, PET-CT, PET-MRT with respect to known and future indications. They also cover these topics regarding brain, heart and all common cancer entities (including rare cancers). In addition, there are chapters on screening, novel quantitative approaches in PET-imaging, and new strategies for reduced radiation exposure in multi-modal imaging.
