Reviews

Anyone who has read the earlier diaries of Pepys, from 1660-69, will delight in this compilation of later notes from the master. Collected and published together for the first time by academic and historian C.S. Knighton, the items give us an insight into the world of Pepys in the later years of the 17th century. Unlike his original diaries - which he gave up writing because he wrongly thought he was going blind - these concentrate not so much on the minutiae of Pepys's everyday affairs but on particular aspects of his life as a politician and civil servant. The language is pleasantly archaic and sometimes slightly confusing, as certain words have evolved to have different meanings over the centuries. Overall, however, this is Pepys at his peppery best. As always he emerges as the world's first spin doctor, showing himself in the best possible light and being swift to lay the blame for calamities on other people's shoulders. A must for serious historians. (Kirkus UK)
