Overview

Encompassing all aspects of the structures of peptides and proteins, this book adopts a problem-oriented approach to the topic. Starting with a look at the structures and properties of the 20 amino acids that occur in proteins, and moving on to the synthesis of polypeptides and the isolation of proteins, this volume then addresses the methods of analysis of protein characteristics, including the modern methods of sequence analysis by mass spectrometry. Further chapters examine the three-dimensional nature of protein structure, and introduce the student to the use of computer applications (molecular graphics, databases, bioinformatics) in protein chemistry. Original research data is used in many of the problems, and throughout sufficient background biology is included, thus putting the subject into context for chemists. Aimed at first and second-year chemistry students, this title should also be of interest to students of biochemistry and provides a concise account of the basic principles underlying a given subject, embodying an independent-learning philosophy and including worked examples.

Reviews

As a tutorial biological chemistry text, Proteins and Peptides is ... well-balanced and informative ... a useful aid for the 1st and 2nd year student ... -- The Biochemist, October 2003, p 37 The Biochemist Peptides and Proteins does a commendable job of covering the field while remaining an easy-to-read and accessible text ... Peptides and Proteins is most suitable as an introductory teaching text and would be worthwhile for any undergraduate in either chemistry of biochemistry who wishes to learn more about the subject. I also heartily recommend it as a valuable addition to any university library. -- Australian Journal of Chemistry, 2003, 56, 839 Australian Journal of Chemistry ... a very useful introduction to this area for first-year undergraduates and a valuable addition to any library. -- The Chemical Educator, Vol 8, No 6, 2003, p 415-416 Chemical Educator ... aimed at undergraduates, it will undoubtedly find use among many postgraduates and other researchers whose work moves into the area of proteins. -- Chemistry & Industry, 1 December 2003, Issue 23, p 28-29 Chemistry and Industry ... this textbook enables the student to work through the elementary fundamentals of peptides and proteins without the need for any previous knowledge ... a didactic and well-written introduction to the subject ... -- Angewandte Chemie, International Edition, Vol 43, No 19, 3 May 2004, p 2470 Angewandte Chemie, International Edition
