Reviews

“This personal, impassioned—and also well written—book fills a longtime interpretive void, linking art history to Jewish Studies.  Epstein, a noted scholar of medieval Jewish manuscripts, expands his vision here to address a wider historical scope of Jewish artifacts.  His close looking at selected works and their meanings provides a stimulating analysis of the content of Jewish art for specialists as well as for a wider public.” —Larry Silver, co-editor of Canons and Values: Ancient to Modern “In his singularly accessible and engaging way, Epstein guides us through a fresh reappraisal of art produced for Jewish readers and viewers in the Middle Ages. People of the Image provides a revealing introduction to a fascinating subject and a provocative challenge for those already familiar with it. It is a deeply personal and humane book.” —Adam S. Cohen, co-author of Art and Architecture of the Middle Ages: Exploring a Connected World

Cohen, co-author of Art and Architecture of the Middle Ages: Exploring a Connected World “‘Speculate boldly, but not wildly’ is the motto of this erudite scholar. Marc Epstein combines exceptional imagination with meticulous attention to detail. This richly illustrated book breaks new ground in the study of medieval Jewish illuminated manuscripts while revisiting Epstein’s previous work with new insights. A treasure!” —Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Ronald S. Lauder Chief Curator of the Core Exhibition at POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, and University Professor Emerita at New York University
