Overview

Pemberton is a yellow, fuzzy Labrador Retriever-and he wants nothing more than to meet this ""forever family"" he's been hearing about! As a puppy, Pemberton is taken from his mother and brought to a puppy mill, where he desperately misses the comfort of being loved and cared for. When he's rescued by local shelter workers, he finds himself in a foster home for other dogs like him. While the older labs, Gus and Churchill, help Pemberton come out of his shell, he still longs to find a home where he truly belongs. One day, a family with a shy little boy comes to visit the foster home, and Pemberton thinks this just might be the ""forever family"" he's heard about . . . Heartwarming, emotional, and uplifting, this early reader's chapter book is sure to delight young puppy-lovers and speak to the need to belong in all of us.

Author Information

Steve Ladik received his Juris Doctor degree from Southern Methodist University in 1983. He is Managing Member at Ladik Law Firm, PLLC, and possesses forty years of experience in the field of immigration and nationality law, where he has developed a highly regarded national sports industry practice, providing immigration-related counsel and representation to professional athletes, teams, tours, and leagues in a variety of sports. In his law practice he has helped many children who have overcome all odds to join their family members in the US after losing loved ones in their home countries, and he always handles these matters at no cost to the children or their families. In 2008 Ladik visited puppies from a friend's yellow lab and picked Pemberton to be his forever friend-but it was actually Pemberton that picked Steve, because when Steve sat down on the grass with all the pups, it was Pemberton that jumped in his lap. They remained together until 2020 when Pemberton sadly crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Steve has always had dogs and he can readily recite all of their names from Lisa through Daisy, Toby, Beau, Pemberton, Charlie, and his current lab Churchill. He felt this book could bring attention to the need to end puppy mills and promote rescue organizations and adoption of dogs in need of forever families. Illustrator and author Patrick Corrigan grew up in a cloudy town in Cheshire where he brightened up his life with various creative endeavors and activities (his favorite was cross stitch!). He studied ceramics at university before training as an art teacher. He then went on to become the art director of a busy design studio in London. In 2018 he made the decision to try his hand as a freelance illustrator and has never looked back. His work has been commissioned by numerous clients including: Flying Eye, Walker, Templar, Harper Collins, Penguin, Hachette, Dorling Kindersly, Usborne, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Magic Cat Publishing. He was long-listed for the 2022 and 2023 World Illustration Awards.
