Overview

Later that afternoon Rick was sitting in Betsey and Zack was teaching him the controls and what they made the plane do. And he planned on drilling him in this kind of instruction until he knew it without thinking about it. Remember, no one learned to fly in one day. Just like anything worth the effort, it takes practice, practice and more practice. Zack said as the youngster stared back at him totally confused. Let's go flying. This brought a big smile on Rick's face. Ok, let's go! he said excited at the thought. Zack went out in front of the plane and grabbed the propeller and yelled, Ignition. Rick looked down at the instrument panel and flipped the ignition switch on, then raised his hand up with his thumb up. Zack gave the prop a pull and the motor roared to life. Rick had the feeling that the motor was going a little too fast, but figured Zack would fix that when he got in. Rick watched as Zack pulled the wheel chocks out, but when he backed up he tripped over Mike's water bowl. Whenever Mike got thirsty and the bowl was empty the dog would carry it over to Zack to be refilled. The men were so busy they didn't see this happen, so when Zack tripped over it, needless to say they were all surprised. Meanwhile the plane was rolling up the drive towards the house. Rick looked back at Zack and was calculating whether he would catch up in time. Or would the plane hit the house first. It looked to Rick like Zack was going to lose this race and the house was doomed. Rick panicked and started pulling levers and flipping switches. The plane speeded up and now Rick was really afraid he would demolish the house. So he pushed on one of the pedals and the plane spun around and was headed right for Zack, who now decided, instead of catching the plane, he better get out of the way or get sliced up by the prop. He dove out of the way just in time. Rick looked back at him for some kind of help. He could see Zack sitting on the ground with his hands up to his mouth yelling something. But the motor was way too loud to hear anything. Rick was scanning the instrument panel in a panic and nothing was registering. Oh God what am I going to do! he thought quickly. Now the plane was headed for the barn and he knew he had to do something. So he hit that rudder pedal again and turned the plane toward all the animals. They all seemed to know something was wrong. They just stood there looking right at him and the plane. It must have finally dawned on them that they were in serious trouble. But it was too late for some of them. There were chicken feathers flying all over the place. Rick hit the rudder pedal again and held it down and the plane kept going in circles. Another chicken went through the prop and more feathers went flying everywhere. But Rick felt like he could buy some time turning in circles like this, hopefully, without hitting something really big like the truck or the barn. Finally Rick spotted the switch that said ignition, and hit it. He hoped that down would have the opposite effect as up did. The motor stopped just as quickly as it started. Zack jumped up on the wing and asked, Are you all right? Rick was looking around at the damage he had done with the plane. He could see some of the animals still running across the pasture. Some chicken feathers were still coming down. I'm sorry, Zack, he gulped and said, I don't know what happened. They both scanned the damage and started laughing at the same time. After a good healthy laugh, Zack said, I guess we better start cleaning this mess up. Rick, Zack said, trying not to laugh again, Your solo flight doesn't happen for quite some time yet.
