Overview

"""Pathbreakers"" highlights the experiences of African American officers in the U.S. Marine Corps from the mid-twentieth century to the present. African Americans first served as officers shortly after World War II. The book is based on oral history interviews with 21 officers ranging in rank from captain to lieutenant general whose careers, in sum, span from Vietnam to U.S. military efforts in the Global War on Terrorism. The testimonies of the various officers document the racial climate in the Marine Corps over this period and relate the strategies and approaches taken by these individuals to achieve success despite instances of racism and discrimination. The officers also comment on and evaluate Marine Corps policies for recruiting and retaining African American officers."

Author Information

"The U.S. Marine Corps History Division's (HD) primary task is to research and write the Marine Corps' official history. HD also preserves personal experiences and observations through oral history interviews; and deploys field historians to record history in the making. Fred H. Allison, PhD (Texas Tech University), is a retired Marine major who has been an oral historian and writer since 2000. He has authored several articles on Marine Corps oral history and aviation. Colonel Kurtis P. Wheeler, MA (Harvard University), is a Reserve Marine colonel who serves as a Field Historian for HD. He completed a combat tour in al-Anbar Province, Iraq (2007), where he documented the war. He is the co-editor of the book ""Al-Anbar Awakening"" published by Marine Corps University Press in 2009 and the author of numerous professional military journal articles."
