I was born on the 45 degrees parallel South Island of New Zealand in 1954 and at the tender age of 19 and much to my parents grief, I stuck out my thumb and caught the first ride that came along to travel the world. Many people ask me how on earth I dropped anchor in a place like this; a tiny village in an insignificant under-developed banana republic in South America. Often people I met in my travels had never even heard of Ecuador, let alone of the small Andean town nestled in the so named, Valley of Longevity, south of the equator. Now I am known as the town sheriff.
