Overview
Panopticon; Or, The Inspection-House is a book by English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham, written between 1785 and 1791 and first published in 1791. The book lays out Bentham's concept for a new type of prison building: The Panopticon. The design of the Panopticon allows a watchman to observe occupants without the occupants knowing whether or not they are being watched. Bentham initially conceived the Panopticon as a design for a new type of prison, but later expanded its use to hospitals, schools, and factories. The all-seeing design was intended to serve as a means of control. Bentham's ideas were largely influenced by the writings of the French philosopher Michel Foucault, and have contributed significantly to debates about surveillance, transparency, and social control.
