Overview

Painting is one of the most satisfying and fulfilling hobbies imaginable - everyone dreams of trying it, and this book will show you how easy it is to paint successfully. This is the ideal introductory book for anyone with an interest in learning how to paint with oils, acrylics and gouache. All you need to do is follow some very simple instructions and master the basic techniques from the superb step-by-step photography. There is comprehensive information on the range and characteristics of the different types of paint, and a suggested starter palette of colours. Advice is given on choosing and using paintbrushes, palettes, papers and canvas, and on working with paint additives and sealing work with different types of varnish. The basic techniques are demonstrated, from scaling up a photograph, making an underdrawing and blending colours on the palette, to applying paint with various brush strokes and applicators. Different paint techniques are shown, such as alla prima, scumbling, sponging, spattering, drybrush, sgrafitto and impasto. Popular subject areas are covered, from landscapes to nature and still lives. Thirty practice exercises teach through example - paint an Italian country scene, anemones in alla prima style, an impasto landscape in oils, and studies of autumn leaves, watermelons, pumpkins, a teapot and seashells. Concisely written, beautifully illustrated with over 400 photographs, and packed with techniques, this book contains everything you need to know to get started in painting, to begin to produce your own art works, and to advance quickly to an excellent standard.
