Overview

The Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine provides clear and concise coverage for practitioners and students in the tropics. Medical conditions are ordered by system except for the five major tropical conditions - malaria, HIV/STDs, tuberculosis, diarrhoeal diseases, and acute respiratory infections - and fevers. The book has been designed to be as practical as possible with illustrations of blood films and stool smears, which are useful for diagnosis, as well as clinical features, diagnosis, and management. In this new edition the cardiology, chest medicine, renal, and endocrinology sections have undergone major revision, and there is new material on mental health and ophthalmology.

Reviews

This is a gem of a handbook. Quite unlike the other oxford handbook series as the book deals with common pathologies in developing nations (malaria, TB, diarrhoeal diseases) but also the common global killers - cancer, strokes and heart conditions. With management guidelines taken from the world health organisation which are both structured and practical, one would be confident to parachute into dense Amazonian forest armed with this book and a stethoscope. Mad Mag, ... is an excellent resource for those working in low-resource circumstances. ... it attempts to provide common sense, rational and relevant information and advice (...)for those working within the tropics and in resource-poor settings, it is unique, practical and excellent resource and can be thoroughly recommended. Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy The pocket sized format, with robust plasticized cover ensuring its portability and durability, combined with concise yet highly informative coverage of a vast number of topics will ensure the continued success of the second edition of this popular handbook... I have no reservations in recommending the second edition of the OHTM to both students and practitioners of tropical medicine. Whether working in the tropics or in resource-rich settings, this handbook will certainly prove its worth. Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene This is a well-written, reasonably comprehensive handbook of clinical tropical medicine that will be very useful for the practitioner in an isolated setting.
