Overview

Oxford Case Histories in Infection and Microbiology contains over forty-five well structured cases, providing comprehensive coverage of the diagnostic and management dilemmas in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases. Each case comprises of a brief patient history with relevant clinical examination findings, thus insuring the listener is aware of how to confirm a diagnosis rapidly, with reference throughout to laboratory techniques, advice on therapy, epidemiological features, and areas which can be controversial. The cases discussed include common and important pathogens, infections, and serious conditions due to risk of onward spread. Divided by main organ systems, the book also includes a section on systemic infections, and miscellaneous cases which don't fit neatly into one category. It is a perfect self-assessment tool for clinical microbiology and infectious diseases postgraduate trainees. It will also be of interest to medical professionals working in critical care and public health.

Author Information

Peter Lerman is a narrator from the heart of New York City: Brooklyn born and raised. Manhattan and Brooklyn were suffused with the flavors and sounds of the entire world. He tasted it all and heard it all. When you come of age in NYC, nothing is foreign. When you hear a low grumble in his voice on occasion, it is authentic. His first wife told him that he loved her not nearly as much as he loved the sound of his own voice. This made him wonder if other people might love the sound of his voice as well. And so, a narrator was born. Also, an amateur thespian, a trade show presenter, a lecturer, an off-key cabaret singer, and an inveterate teller of jokes one does not tell in mixed company. Peter has been a professional photographer in New York City, owned a model and talent management company, and knocked around from Brooklyn to Manhattan and back again only to wind up in Connecticut. His breath control is fabulous because he is also a board certified respiratory therapist. He has appeared onstage as Horace Vandergelder in Hello Dolly, Gangster #2 in Kiss Me Kate, Bobby Gould in Speed-the-Plow, the Governor of Texas in Best Little Whorehouse . . ., Jonathan Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace, and Lenny in Rumors. The voice is deep and resonant. Sometimes formal, sometimes not. Never stale. Always eminently listenable. Bridget Atkins is a full-time NHS consultant in microbiology and infectious diseases in Oxford University Hospitals. She has a major interest in bone and joint infections and has published and presented extensively on laboratory diagnostic methods, the multidisciplinary management of these complex infections, the patient pathway, and the optimal delivery of bone infection services. She works as a physician on the bone infection unit at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital. She is also training program director in infectious diseases and medical microbiology in Health Education England, Thames Valley. Hilary Humphreys is a professor of clinical microbiology at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a consultant microbiologist in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin. He has a longstanding research interest in hospital infections, has published widely on many aspects of this and he has led a number of guideline groups in Ireland and in the UK. He has been involved in the teaching of both undergraduate and graduate entry medical students for some years as well as pharmacy students and others. He has developed online material as part of blended learning and he is a former national specialty director for Clinical Microbiology in Ireland. William Irving has been a professor and honorary consultant in virology at the University of Nottingham and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust since 2002. His research interest is in the natural history of hepatitis C virus infection, and has published extensively on this subject. He cochairs HCV Research UK, a multi-center consortium creating a national cohort, clinical database, and biobank of 12,000 patients infected with HCV. He currently chairs the National Strategy Group for Viral Hepatitis. Andrew Woodhouse is Head of specialty training in infectious diseases for Health Education England, working across the West Midlands. He is also a clinical director for the Infectious Disease Department at Heartlands Hospital, Birmingham, UK.
