Overview

The night of a big election soon ends in disappointment for four best friends during their junior year of college. Danny, Rafael, Libby, and Johannes are having the time of their lives and their only concerns are classwork and when and where the next party is taking place. However, their world turns upside down after one of the Nation's most famous celebrities gets murdered and causes discourse throughout the country. His death causes a domino effect which leads to the destruction of the United States of America and the creation of a fascist dictatorship known as Freedonia. How does this effect their friendship and their dreams? What actions do they take to direct the paths of their lives? Who will they meet along their journey? Through sheer will and determination, these young adults quickly adapt to their new environment and decide to change their fate.

Author Information

"Darius Rahmaan fell in love with reading, writing, history and politics at a very young age. Due to his profound hearing loss, reading became his primary mode of entertainment because, unlike with television and cinema, he did not have to hear to envision a fantastical world hidden between words on a page. He read voraciously throughout his life as a form of escapism. Mr. Rahmaan's enchanted relationship with reading naturally evolved into a fascination with history, an adoration for writing, and an enthusiasm for politics. The fascination with history came about when his mother and grandmother exposed him to books detailing Ancient Egyptian history, culture, and mythology when he was 3 years old. His love and knowledge of history and politics can be seen throughout his current novel Our Time.Darius Rahmaan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Memphis. Mr. Rahmaan gained additional knowledge about politics and the government when he worked as a Legislative Intern at the Tennessee General Assembly. Mr. Rahmaan is constantly writing and he has won several awards. He wrote ""The Veil"", a short story that was published in the award-winning literary magazine Desiderata. He also wrote a short story titled ""Painful Joy"" which was published in the award-winning literary magazine Stuck in the Middle. Additionally, Mr. Rahmaan won the Sewanee Award for Excellence in Writing. Mr. Rahmaan's novel Our Time means so much to him because it is a fictional story rooted in truth. As a historian, Darius wants Our Time to entertain yet also enlighten, in order to prevent the repetition of further injustices among humanity. Furthermore, Mr. Rahmaan is a part of multiple marginalized communities as a deaf, black, queer, and neurodivergent man. He also wrote this novel because he is passionate about diverse representation in fiction."
