Table of ContentsReviewsBookLife Prize - 2023 Plot/Idea: 8 out of 10 Originality: 8 out of 10 Prose: 8 out of 10 Character/Execution: 9 out of 10 Overall: 8.25 out of 10 Assessment: Plot/Idea: Kowalewski's novel has a confusing, enigmatic start, but as the story goes on and the true home for souls is built up, readers are left with a thoughtful, romantic book. Readers are also left with a shocking ending that will leave them needing book two as soon as possible. Prose: Kowalewski's first person prose allows the narrator to talk directly to the reader. Much of this writing is very reflective, almost philosophical, which is very fitting for a novel revolving around the concept of souls and soulmates. Originality: Our Lives in Between refreshingly turns conventions surrounding the idea of 'soul mates' on their heads. Even though Harmony and Kaleb are destined to be together for eternity and have been reincarnated over and over, their eternity is not limited to their lives on Earth (which Kowalewski has also creatively established as just being a way for souls to become educated). Character/Execution: As Harmony discovers she is an extreme soul and has an extreme soulmate, the reader is benefitted by Kowalewski's inclusions of what happened in her past lives. As she comes to make sense of everything that's ever happened between them, so do the readers--if they hadn't inferred it already. Harmony's journey is also positively impacted by her mentor/guide Luke, an exemplary supporting character. -The Book Life Prize Reviewed by Pikasho Deka for Readers' Favorite Our Lives in Between is the first book in The Enlightened Series by Billie Kowalewski. Unable to process the loss of her lover, Veronica Edwards eventually succumbs to death, only to wake up as her true self, Harmony. Harmony soon realizes she is a Soul who has lived multiple lives on Earth to further her lessons. But in most of those lives, she tragically meets death whenever she comes across Kaleb's avatar. Harmony learns that she and Kaleb are extreme Souls eternally bonded together. With their fates intertwined, both reveal their mutual feelings for each other. But a nefarious group called the Eradicators is hell-bent on stopping the Earth experiment for good. Tasked with writing a story of Earth's creation, Harmony inadvertently puts herself and Kaleb in danger of disappearing forever. Author Billie Kowalewski has delivered a stellar first installment of what promises to be a fantasy saga unlike any other. Featuring a healthy dose of romance, mystery, and the fantastical, Our Lives in Between engages you from the very first page all the way until the last. Kowalewski's accessible prose lends credence to an immersive plot, creating a breezy and well-paced story any fantasy enthusiast would love to read. The narrative is smooth and sails past without a single hitch. I really liked the characters. The main characters have well-defined and distinct traits, with a good supporting cast that helps move the plot forward. Harmony and Kaleb have wonderful chemistry, and their back-and-forth never fails to keep you entertained. All in all, a good read for fantasy and romance lovers alike.
