Osamu Sugiyama Mountains


Overview

Osamu Sugiyama was born in Tokyo in 1946. He graduated from the Yoshida Hanga Academy, a renowned school for Japanese woodblock prints. His teacher was Toshi Yoshida, the eldest son of Hiroshi Yoshida. Toshi Yoshida taught Japanese and international students in the art of woodblock prints until he became seriously ill in the early 1990s and passed away in 1995. Osamu Sugiyama combines his two great passions: mountaineering and the art of color woodblock prints. His works capture his experiences, impressions, and memories from expeditions around the world. Osamu Sugiyama consistently continues the tradition of fascination with mountain landscapes has a long tradition in Japanese printmaking. He dedicates his artistic work exclusively to mountain landscapes. He climbed mountains in Japan, Nepal, Switzerland, and Italy, drawing inspiration from their distinct character. Sugiyama remained an active member of the Yoshida Hanga Academy. The academy supports its artists through regular exhibitions and promotes exchange among woodblock print artists. Osamu Sugiyama combines his two great passions: mountaineering and the art of color woodblock prints. His works capture his experiences, impressions, and memories from expeditions around the world. He made his debut at the 50th anniversary exhibition of the renowned CWAJ Print Exhibition in Tokyo in October 2005. The exhibition brought him great recognition and cemented his reputation as an exceptional Japanese printmaker.
