Overview

A box of tricks, a seven-year-old boy and a dream that would span thirty-seven years. Oofle Dust is the story of Albert le Bas, the softly spoken Irishman who was acknowledged as one of the world's most outstanding magicians. A man at the apex of the ancient and honoured craft of magic. A dream that took him from local carnivals in Ireland during the 1940s to the hallowed stage of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, the BBC studios, West End theatres in London, sparkling venues across Europe and the USA, as well as appearances before royalty. It is the story of variety and entertainment in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s. From opening Ireland's first shop for wizards and magicians, performing on Ireland's first television broadcast to becoming the mainstay of the hugely successful Jurys Cabaret, Albert shared his dream with Betty, the love of his life. A life strewn with roses. Until the thorns appeared.

Author Information

Barbara le Bas is the middle child of Albert le Bas. Growing up in Dublin with a magician father and mother who worked as his sidekick in magic performances, she was surrounded by all things magical. To this day, she has never lost her love and fascination for this ancient craft. Like her father, she sought out new and exciting challenges and in 1995 with her husband and three children she moved to Australia. Barbara lives in Sydney with her husband of 32 years Niall O Leary. An Occupational Therapist by profession Barbara has dedicated her working life to clients with mental health issues; she currently works as a senior clinician on a mental health crisis team and was awarded a citation by the Premier of NSW (The Bushfire Emergency Citation) for her role in the emergency response effort to combat the 2019-2020 bushfires. Along the way Barbara has also completed a diploma in visual arts and her paintings have been exhibited in a Sydney gallery. It has long been on her mind to write this story about a man who nearly 50 years after his death is still regarded as Ireland's foremost magical entertainer. She has finally done it! Oofle Dust is her first book and tells this magical tale of her father Albert Le Bas. Chris Woodward is a prize winning author with three successful hardbound titles and numerous articles to his credit. Now retired, he was a successful magician entertainer, a Gold Star Member of the Inner Magic Circle - and a member of The Grand Order of Water Rats. He has also written about and lectured on many cruise ships on the history of The London Palladium theatre as well as speaking in the UK and America on the history of the theatre and famous magicians of the past.
