OverviewAuthor's Note: It was at the end of August 1981 when I went to Detroit, Michigan. Yugoslav immigrants from North America were gathering in Detroit for a festival of music and dance of all Yugoslav ethnicities, the so-called Yugoslav Festival. We traveled by bus from Canada through a tunnel under the Detroit River, the US Customs and Immigration officials not even looking at our passports. We continued and finally stopped somewhere near the Renaissance Centre on the banks of the Detroit River. I was impressed with the city. I got a glimpse of the America I used to see on films back in (then) Yugoslavia. It was like a live movie happening right there, right then. Everything was new to me - wide avenues, and small alleys, the skyscrapers and the small industrial buildings, the parks and the homeless. The people were very friendly; they didn't complain when I photographed them. Some even posed for the camera. Then came the protest. Croatians and Albanians from Kosovo were protesting against Yugoslavia. It was a peaceful march with strong messages on the banners, some of which became a reality at the beginning of the 90s during the bloody war in the former Yugoslavia. But, that's another story... And now, a generation later, these 75 images of Detroit I took in 1981 have come to see the light of the day through this book.
