Overview

"Frank Coutts grew up in Glasgow in the 1930s and had just embarked on a career in the Metropolitan Police when war broke out in 1939. He joined the army and served with the King's Own Scottish Borderers as a platoon commander during some of the fiercest fighting of the war, as the Allies advanced through Holland and into Germany following the D-Day landings. After the war, Frank Coutts played rugby at international level for Scotland, while his army career took him all over the world - from the jungles of Malaya to the streets of cold-war Berlin. He became Colonel of the Regiment in 1970.First published in 1991, Frank Coutt's memoir, ""One Blue Bonnet"", has now been re-issued to mark the 90th birthday of one of the most popular and respected soldiers of his generation."

Author Information

After his retirement from the army, Frank Coutts spent many years campaigning for the Scottish regiments and doing charitable work. Angered by the government's decision to cut four infantry regiments at a time when more troops were on overseas engagements than ever before in peacetime, Frank lent his full support to the campaign to Save Our Scottish Regiments. Initially, this was successful and the KOSB were spared but the government's wish to amalgamate historic regiments eventually prevailed and the Royal Regiment of Scotland was formed. Since then, Frank has continued to raise funds for his favourite charity, the Seagull Trust, which provides canal cruises for over 6,000 people in Scotland every year.
