Overview

"One Acre At A Time is about a man and woman's struggle to carve out a farm in the wilds of Clay County, WV in the 1870s. Tom and Callie Brown share their faith and good fortune with those around them as they take twelve hundred and eight acres of virgin timber in the head of Little Sycamore Creek and turn it into a working, self-sufficient farm, where they raise most of their food, along with goats, pigs, chickens, cows, horses, and one ""yaller dog"", all in the space of three years. They build fences, houses, and barns from the timber growing on their property and, as they travel around Clay County, people familiar with the area will enjoy recognizing landmarks that are still there to this day."

Author Information

I am a sixty-eight-year-old dad of two, pop paw of three, and husband of one. I grew up in Clay County, WV, worked thirteen years in construction around the coal mines, and taught middle school mathematics for twenty-three years until my retirement in 2011. I am a Deacon and Sunday School teacher in a Southern Baptist Church. I do a lot of fishing in the summer, hunting in the winter and woodworking when the mood hits me. I have been happily married to my wife, Connie, for forty-four years and, together, we live on our forty-three-acre farm in Fayette County, WV. We have three dogs, twelve homing pigeons, ten chickens and one hive of honey bees.
