Overview

Ron has been watching the world, taking the funny bits and putting them on paper since childhood. This book gathers some of the resulting cartoons for those who have known and loved Ron and we hope they will raise a smile for you too. Many of his cartoons are the work of a moment, scribbled on a napkin in a café or similar when inspiration strikes - normally donated to those who inspired them - but fortunately some have been kept. Now in his '80s, Ron has finally achieved his dream of seeing his cartoons in print, thanks to his nurse Hannah Blunsdon who contacted BBC Midlands Today on his behalf. With the help of Ron's best friend since childhood, Cyril Hobbins, and Spring View Publications we are proud to bring some of these cheerful images to a wider audience. Ron's skills have developed since those early days when he was inspired by 1940s comics, but his drawings still retain the humour and something of the child-like innocence of those carefree years.

Author Information

Ron Owen is a true folk artist with no formal art training. He also produces unique, well crafted items from discarded tins - everything from model aircraft driven by wind or solar-power to whirligig windmills in insect or animal form.In the past he was noted for designing and building incredible carnival floats and large Christmas tableaux for children's parties and businesses, in his home town of Kenilworth, Warwickshire. He is also a very talented sign writer.Ron will produce a drawing at the drop of a hat and can often be found sketching on holiday, at home or abroad, creating something special in minutes. He has gained many friends (not to mention the odd complimentary drink or meal) after sketching on a paper tablecloth or napkin. Most such cartoons have been given away freely, not expecting any reward, except a happy smile and often a laugh.
