Overview

On Nana's Shoulders is the story of families--their unraveling and reconfiguring, of missteps and unexpected directions, of hard decision, of love and hurt and all the consequences that follow. Debra Sherrill, having been blind-sided by an ugly divorce, is struggling to redefine herself just as her teenage son is propelling himself down a path of failure. When he meets a young woman who is hell-bent on success, the consequences are unexpected and fall squarely on Debra and her young grandson, forcing her to prioritize the people she loves.

Reviewed By Kathryn Bennett for Readers' Favorite On Nana's Shoulders by Vicki Schoen is the story of families, the way we all must work through life and everything that comes with it. How we have ups and downs in life, mistakes are made, things fall apart and then we must find a way to put ourselves back together. Debra finds herself trying to hold the pieces of her life together when she is blindsided by a divorce. Debra's teenage son finds his own mistaken pathway, one that leaves Debra holding the bag. Debra must make some hard choices in how she will move forward with her new and unexpected life. On Nana's Shoulders is so unbelievably relatable. Honestly, there were many points where I stopped and asked myself if this was non-fiction, instead of fiction. Debra absolutely could be any woman out there, and there are so many who have found themselves in her shoes. This made me connect with Debra and her story immediately, and it made me emotionally invest in the book. Vicki Schoen has crafted a wonderful story that flows beautifully and will make you not want to set it down. Life after divorce is hard enough, without getting into the aspects of having an unexpected family surprise. The emotions of these life trials seem to leap off the page and stay with you. I found myself rooting for Debra and saying friendly comforts a few times out loud as I read. Perhaps I got a little too invested, but really to me, it's the mark of a fantastic book that can do that. So, if you are looking to invest time in a great story, feel real emotions and be entertained, pick up On Nana's Shoulders by Vicki Schoen. It is a great read, emotional, yes, but it is worth every moment you spend with the characters.
