N o attempt has been made to describe the use of oil in locomotive or marine practice, or in heating, tempering and hardening furnaces, because these applications are so extensive as to deserve individual treatment. In stead, this volume is confined to the burning of oil in the furnaces of stationary steam boilers, and the endeavor has been to cover the ground fully and thoroughly.
