Overview

Our political and financial systems, and particularly the latter, have fallen so short of expectations they deserve to be questioned. The United States is experiencing a very serious disruption of its economy that will affect every other segment of human affairs and endeavors. The universal question is: how did this happen? Oh the World Owes Us a Living notes some of the causes, but more importantly, suggests what we can do to correct long-standing abuses to our economic and political systems. For decades these abuses have been controlled by special interest groups. Author Carlton Laird provides the tools needed for the public to take back their government through voter initiative. According to Laird, the public needs to be in command of their financial system. It should be viewed as part of the public domain. This is the only way that the monstrous public debt can be eliminated. Although we have never had a true, fully-operative democracy, it is still possible to have a government of, by, and for the people. About the Author Mr. Laird is a graduate of the School of Engineering, University of Wisconsin. He was a manufacturing engineer and served over a period of thirty years as city manager for six municipalities. He was also editor of The American City magazine, a consultant for a proposed new town development, a utilities consultant for Addis Abba, Ethiopia, and on the staff of the Commercial Fisheries Division of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. In 1952 and 1954, he was an unsuccessful candidate for the U. S. House of Representatives from the fourth congressional district of Nebraska.
