At 11 years of age she relocated to the mainland Grenada, where she attended the St Joseph of Cluny Convent. She taught for three years in Grenada before changing careers and becoming a flight attendant, with Barbados her home base. She was awarded a diploma in writing for children and teenagers from the Institute of Children's Literature, Connecticut. Maria is the mother of two sons and lives with her husband in Barbados.
