Overview

"A compilation of delightfully illustrated, darkly humorous verses satirizing the absurdities of the Trump Administration and American society today, these poems are a poignant take on current politics, race, gender, climate, media, and culture. It may look like a book for the nursery-but it's not. The Perfect Gift Book With facts and historical context throughout, these provocative verses will leave readers cringing, laughing, outraged and inspired. Shining a spotlight on everything from ""pussy-grabbing"" to Black Lives Matter, COVID-19, neo-Nazis, migrant caravans, climate change inaction, opioid addiction, Russian interference, impeachment, the Me Too movement, Twitter feuds, school shootings, fake news, and more. Prefect for fans of ""Dumpty"" by John Lithgow; ""Whose Boat is This Boat?"" by The Late Show Staff, ""Go The F**k To Sleep"" by Adam Mansbach; and ""The Donald J. Trump Presidential Twitter Library"" by The Daily Show With Trevor Noah. Nursery Rhymes for Troubled Times will appeal to progressive readers following politics, social issues and news; voters interested in the 2020 elections; readers who enjoy humor, satire, and witty word-play; those who grew up with Mother Goose including Baby Boomers; readers who like accessible, open-anywhere-and-read gift books."

Reviews

Even though 'bubbles'-vacuum-sealed communities where everyone inside agrees about everything-are one of the targets of Gilmer's satire, it's possible that he and I may be bubble-mates. There isn't a single page of this charming but razor-edged collection of verse and illustrations that didn't get a vigorous nod of agreement from me. -Hal Crowther, critic, essayist, and author of Freedom Fighters and Hellraisers, winner of the 2019 Independent Press Gold Medal for nonfiction; recipient of the H.L. Mencken Writing Award, three Pushcart Prizes, a Lillian Smith Award for essays, and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle prize in Criticism for Gather at the River. Brilliant. -Lee Smith, author of Dimestore, Fair and Tender Ladies and 20 other works of fiction; winner of The Robert Penn Warren Prize for Fiction, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, and The O. Henry Award.
