Overview

Grand Prize Winner, Nonfiction -- Authors Talk About It 2017 Book Contest A Finalist in the Memoir Category for the 2017 Indie Excellence Book Awards A Finalist in the Autobiography/Memoir Category in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards Carol D. Marsh founded, directed, and lived at Miriam's House, a Washington, DC, residence for homeless women living with AIDS. In this powerful memoir, Marsh recalls how she came to confront issues far removed from her own experience: addiction, poverty, and the institutional racism that permeates our society on every level. From the humorous to the tragic, the mundane to the sublime, Marsh offers a gripping view into a world where the stakes are high and love is pushed to its limit. Nowhere Else I Want to Be is the story of the inspiring women who transformed Marsh's life. From Kimberly, who triumphs over a lifelong alcohol addiction, to Alyssa, who dies reaching out for the mother who abandoned her, Marsh witnesses the spectrum of human experience and the depth of the human spirit.

Reviews

Takes us into the lives of the women of Miriam's House--homeless, black and living with AIDS--and gives them a much needed voice in a sometimes cruel and harsh world. --Jesse J. Holland, author of The Invisibles and Black Men Built the Capitol
Marsh writes with joy and humor about her years coming face-to-face with the gritty, sometimes painful, often joyous realities of those we keep on the margins of our society. --David Hilfiker, MD, author of Healing the Wounds, Not All of Us Are Saints, and Urban Injustice
Carol's memoir deepens the readers understanding of the complexities faced by women suffering from homelessness, AIDS and trauma. Her storytelling is vivid and compelling. One cannot enter into the stories she shares without being changed. I could not put Nowhere Else I Want to Be down. --Killian Noe, Founding Director, Recovery Cafe, Seattle, Washington
Nowhere Else I Want to Be is not a book easily defined, as it balances perfectly the qualities of humor, love, sadness, disdain, and acceptance, combined into one spectacular memoir. Carol Marsh takes her readers on the same journey she once walked, alongside society's forgotten as they struggle to better themselves, contribute to communities who continuously reject them, and just survive, at any cost. --Authors Talk About It, 5-Star Review
Nowhere Else I Want to Be is an inspiring read and Carol does an excellent job of presenting the women's stories as genuinely and honestly as possible. --Readers' Favorite, 5-Star Review
