Overview

"After a fairy-tale courtship in 1980s New York City, Maggie's young marriage shatters when her ""perfect"" husband--a star editor at The Wall Street Journal--is diagnosed with and dies of AIDS, leaving her with two young children in a city electrified by paranoia about the new epidemic. Devastated by his betrayal, Maggie struggles to protect herself and her children from stigma, keeping the circumstances of her husband's death a secret for nearly twenty-five years. It is only when a journey of self-discovery aligns with her children's coming of age and a new world of sexual tolerance that she can finally embrace the truth and set herself free. With a foreword by Wall Street Journal editor Laura Landro and an afterword by Today show psychologist Dr. Dale Atkins, Now Everyone Will Know is an honest, unflinching look at the damaging nature of family secrets and an inspiring call to embrace every truth--the good, the bad, the ugly--that makes us who we are."

Less than a year later, her husband, John, would die of AIDS. In the wake of this unspeakable trauma, I watched Maggie bravely, tirelessly rebuild her life and raise two extraordinary kids. Familiar as I was with her story, nothing prepared me for the transcendent power of Now Everyone Will Know. Maggie's unflinchingly honest memoir of loss, grief, and ultimately triumphant self-discovery is a book for anyone affected by the plague of AIDS, anyone who has struggled to process grief and make sense of the bewildering randomness of life and death. -Tony Goldwyn, actor and director This is a book I just inhaled. I could not put it down. Maggie Kneip is a courageous and beautiful writer, willing to bare all the painful chapters in her life. There is something universal in her story. It will resonate with every woman who has something to hide-and that is most of us, myself included. -Magee Hickey, news reporter, WPIX-TV New York Maggie Kneip was one of this country's hidden women: an AIDS widow who kept her husband's deadly secret for more than two decades to protect her children from stigma. Now she opens up for the first time in this stunning, beautifully written, and important book. Now Everyone Will Know is a heartbreaking yet ultimately triumphant tale of love, loss, betrayal-and redemption. -Joanne Lipman, journalist, editor, and co-author of Strings Attached Now Everyone Will Know is by turns surprising, heartbreaking, inspiring, and funny. Maggie Kneip's story of love, loss, and betrayal will move you, and it will haunt you. Like Isabel Gillies and Marco Roth, Kneip writes of the secrets families keep, and the wreckage such secrets can cause. This is an important book, not just because it's a fascinating memoir, but because it's a powerful historical document about the devastating effects of the AIDS crisis and a moving meditation on the wages of love. -Melissa Kirsch, author of The Girl's Guide to Absolutely Everything I helped take care of John Andrew, my brilliant boss at The Wall Street Journal, at the dawn of the AIDS epidemic, a barely remembered moment marked by fear and stigma and certain death. John died with extraordinary speed, leaving most unsaid. Now close to three decades later, his widow, Maggie Kneip, has recaptured John's unique voice, while also chronicling, with honesty and courage, her struggle to accept the enduring mystery at the core of their relationship. A meditation on loss, forgiveness, and the ties that bind, Now Everyone Will Know is indelible. -Alix M. Freedman, journalist Maggie Kneip has gathered the exquisite details of her heartbreaking journey like lilies from a field, wrapped them in words of brutal honesty, and delivered a debut memoir that serves up laughter and deep-belly sorrow in equal measure. To render the unspeakable in such a way that provides a necessary healing for not only the writer but readers as well is a gift. Now Everyone Will Know tells a new story of the ones often left out of the tale of the AIDS epidemic-the ones left behind. --Katori Hall, actress, journalist, playwright, and 2010 Olivier Award winner for Broadway's The Mountaintop
