Born in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Taylor began his literary career early and became known for his vivid travel writings and translations, particularly of German literature. Worked as a travel correspondent for several newspapers, including the New York Tribune. Published numerous travel books documenting his journeys to places like Egypt, China, Japan, and India. Notable Works, Travel Writing: """"A Journey to Central Africa"""" (1854), """"The Lands of the Saracen"""" (1855). Poetry: """"Poems of the Orient"""" (1854), """"The Poet's Journal"""" (1862). Translation: Known for his translation of Goethe's """"Faust"""" into English, which is still highly regarded today. Served as the U.S. Minister to Germany from 1878 until his death.
